A new course to close out 2018!

We constantly strive to keep our course offerings up to date and relevant to the industry, so we aim to add new courses to our calendar several times a year! Our latest new workshop is Lean for Construction – A Practical Approach. We want to help you reduce costs, improve lead times, and foster collaboration by introducing key Lean concepts and how they can applied on a daily basis. Not sure what Lean for Construction is? Here’s a good overview.

Here’s what you’ll learn in our workshop:

A practical, jargon-free approach to Lean
Implement a culture of problem solving in 4 simple steps:

  • Define value from your customer’s perspective
  • Capture the current state: visually capture all activities required to bring the project from initiation to completion
    • The importance of value-adding work
    • How to capture the 8 types of waste
  • Develop the plan: prioritize wastes for elimination
  • Improve using Plan, Do, Check, Act: design and implement effective solutions

The resulting impact on costs, lead-time, quality, and culture

Spotlight on: Project Planning and Cost Control

Controlling your costs is a very important aspect of business and planning your projects effectively will definitely help you with that goal! Our popular Project Planning and Cost Control workshop is back in Burnaby on May 31 to June 1 and we can’t wait! 

The course is designed to provide owners, managers, estimators, and field personnel with a general knowledge of the process of planning and controlling a project from beginning to end utilizing ways and means of monitoring, saving and controlling costs. Here’s what’s covered:

  • Understanding the impact and methodology of construction cost control.
  • Ways and means of minimizing and controlling costs on site.
  • Project cost forecasting and accounting functions on site.
  • Project planning and its purpose and effect on project cost control.
  • How to communicate & assist management re: cost methods and control.
  • Gain additional insight into the process of work and cost analysis.
  • Cost reporting systems – new technology in monitoring costs and reports.

  • Understanding the Contract process from bidding to project close-out.
  • Review of 100 companies and their methods in controlling & saving costs.

Spotlight on: Supervisors Bootcamp – Practical Leadership Toops for Front Line Supervisors

One of our popular courses is back for 2018! Our Supervisors Bootcamp is returning to Victoria on April 27, Prince George on May 29, Fort St John on June 21, Burnaby on July 11, and Whitehorse on May 15.

The Supervisors Bootcamp is designed specifically for front-line supervisors and managers in all industries. It is open to individuals with all levels of experience, but is most effective for those working for companies with an already established safety management system. Participants will be given a leadership ‘tool kit’ comprised of the simplest but most effective leadership concepts, from which they can effectively build and develop their own leadership style. They will also take self-assessment questionnaires and participate in exercises based on the actual work they do and the crews they lead.

Spotlight on: Construction Law

When it comes to your business, knowledge of the law is extremely important. Our popular Construction Law course teaches you the basics of contract law and the BC Builders Lien Act, and how it relates to your business. Here’s the course outline:

Participants will develop an understanding of contract law as it relates to construction and the various CCDC/CCA and other contracts used within the industry. Participants will also learn how the BC Builders Lien Act works and the other legal means to resolve construction disputes and avoid litigation. At the end of the course participants will be able to:
  • Understand the basics of contract law –intention, offer, acceptance, consideration, capacity and legality
  • Be familiar with various CCDC/CCA contracts -how and why they are used
  • Be familiar with various legal terms used in contracts
  • Understand the contract responsibilities of various parties
  • Understand the bidding process and contractual obligations
  • Define back charges and how to avoid them
  • Avoid construction disputes and claims from the site level
  • Write RFIs and Change Orders
  • Understand the dispute resolution process – negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation
  • Use the Builder’s Lien Act to obtain security
  • Use the small claims process to collect debts
  • Understand environmental law and how it impacts projects
  • Understand safety law and it impacts construction companies
  • Understand how specifications and drawings fit within the contractual hierarchy
  • Understand the contractual relationship between contractor and sub-contractor
  • Compile and submit proper extras and claims

Our Communications Skills course is tailored for the needs of construction supervisors and managers, and will definitely teach you a few things! Here’s the course description:

This Gold Seal Certified Course is designed to improve skills in communication for supervisors and management in the office and in the field.

Participants will be able to identify and practice skills needed for effective communication and learn about barriers to communication. They will also learn about different communication styles and identify what their dominant style is as well as how to deal with people who have a different style of communication. The course material also provides insight about anger and how to manage it as well as help develop the skills required to supervise others.
