DESCRIPTION:Construction\, renovation\, and maintenance of health care facilities bring specific risks associated with potentially fatal infection and illness. Preventing and controlling infection while these activities take place requires the implementation and support of preventive measures intended to protect patients\, staff\, and visitors from potential harm. Focusing on the application of the CSA Z317.13 standard\, participants will learn how to address necessary measures and help control infection risk in health care facilities. \nCourse Outline \nBackground and Development of CSA Z317.13 \n\nHow and why the Standard was developed\nRisk factors and construction related infections\n\nInfection Prevention and Control Measures – Levels I – IV \n\nIn-Depth examination of proper procedures before\, during and after construction in each of the four levels identified in Table I of the Standard\nHypothetic case studies to test accuracy in identifying levels of control necessary for compliance and discussing outcomes\n\nProcedures \n\nInfection prevention and control measures\nMultidisciplinary teams\nPreventative measures analysis – tables I\, II\, III\n\nRecommended Practices \n\nBest practices in the industry that exceed current standard requirements\n\nUpon successful completion of this course\, you will be able to: \n\nGain a general understanding of CSA Z317.13\nIdentify the risk factors and sources of health care facility infections\nIdentify all staff who should be involved in infection prevention and control measures during any aspect of construction\, renovation and maintenance activities\nReview effective infection prevention and control procedures during construction\, renovation and maintenance\nUnderstand and effectively apply infection prevention and control measures for renovation and/or new construction projects\nLearn about industry best practices and how they can apply to your specific role\n\nWho should attend? \n\nContractors\nConstruction Managers\nArchitects and Design Engineers\nCommissioning Teams\n\nInstructor: Mike Hickey – MF Hickey Consulting \nPresident\, Prince George Hospice Society\nDirector\, Canadian Centre for Healthcare Facilities\nMike Hickey was recently the Director; Facilities Management and Support Services for Northern Health Authority based in Prince George\, BC. Prior to moving to northern BC\, Mike served as an Assistant Director of Facilities Management with the Healthcare Corporation of St. John’s and has worked in both acute care and long term care. He has also completed the management programs of Modern Management\, Quality Management for Healthcare Professionals\, Health Services Management\, and Long Term Care Senior management (academic excellence award) through the Canadian Healthcare Association. He is currently past Chair of the BC Chapter of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES)\, as well as past National President of CHES.  Mike is also a Faculty member for the Canadian Healthcare Construction Program course\, a joint effort of CHES (Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society) and ASHE (American Society for Healthcare Engineering).  He is also a faculty member of the Canadian Standards Association for CSA Standard Z317.13-12\, Infection Control during Construction\, Renovation and Maintenance of Healthcare Facilities.\n*Note: This is Part 1 of an optional 2 Part course – Part 1: Fundamentals of Infection Control\, and Part 2: Effective Implementation and Practical Applications of Infection Control.
