SUMMARY:Construction\, Excavation and Demolition involving Hazardous Building Materials (Breakfast Session) - Burnaby
DESCRIPTION:Section 20.112 of the OHS Regulation was amended to require additional information during hazardous materials surveys. The upcoming breakfast session will provide an opportunity to learn more about these changes and how they can impact your scope of work under renovation and demolition projects involving these materials. \nThe process of sampling building materials to test for hazardous substances may seem straight forward\, but it is often done incorrectly producing misleading or false results. This session will also provide a refresher on regulatory sampling requirements for submitting suspect bulk materials to a laboratory for determination of asbestos content. The presentation will also include a limited discussion of lead and silica bulk sampling protocols\, and will emphasize the importance of appropriate sample collection\, handling and shipping to a laboratory including selection of a laboratory and sampling documentation. \nUnderstanding the correct sampling and analytical methods is essential to a successful hazmat assessment outcome prior to renovation or demolition activities. The significance of adequate training and experience for the person carrying out the hazardous material sampling/survey will also be discussed. In summary\, this session will provide you with the fundamentals of interpreting hazardous material surveys and their associated analytical reports. \nPresenter: Michel J. Crépeau is Technical Operations Manager with Total Safety Services Inc. in Burnaby\, BC. He has over 30 years of local\, national and international experience in occupational hygiene/health & safety and environment\, and has managed the development\, implementation and performance of a wide variety of EHS programs. Michel’s work experience includes federal\, provincial\, municipal and industrial risk assessments as well as hazard investigations. He has worked extensively in the recognition\, evaluation and control of workplace occupational health hazards and frequently provides expert advice on hazardous materials assessments and remediation. Michel is registered with the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (ROH)\, certified with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) and certified with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CHSC). DESCRIPTION:This session is designed to provide participants the required knowledge to understand the principle of hazard recognition and control as well as the methods used to ensure hazards are identified and adequately addressed in the workplace. DESCRIPTION:WorkSafeBC’s amendment to Bill 9 includes two major changes to the requirements for employer incident investigations. First\, section 175 of the Act has been amended to require an employer to undertake a preliminary investigation within 48 hours of the incident. Second\, section 176 of the Act is amended to require an employer to submit a full investigation report to WorkSafeBC within 30 days of an incident. \nThis course is designed to provide participants the required knowledge to understand the principle of incident investigations and the methods used to ensure an adequate investigation is completed. SUMMARY:Hazard Recognition and Control - Burnaby
DESCRIPTION:This session is designed to provide participants the required knowledge to understand the principle of hazard recognition and control as well as the methods used to ensure hazards are identified and adequately addressed in the workplace. At the end of the session participants will have an understanding of the requirements for identifying hazards\, the tools required to assess the identified hazards and score them by priority\, and methods to take the information gathered and develop Safe Work Procedures to mitigate the hazards. Participants will take part in reviewing a number of hazard scenarios as well as developing procedures to mitigate the identified hazards.\n\nTopics covered:\n\nThe regulatory requirements to identify and assess hazards.\nWho may do a hazard assessment?\nHow to gather information regarding the hazards of a process?\nHow to conduct interviews with persons familiar with the process being assessed?\nDeveloping appropriate conclusions and mitigating factors.\nCompleting the Hazard Assessment Form and develop Safe Work Procedures.\n\nInstructor: Terry Duncan is an independent safety specialist with over 30 years of experience in occupational safety. Past roles include safety coordinator for Dominion Bridge of Western Canada\, and safety coordinator/industrial engineer for Freightliner Canada. Terry was also directly involved in the development of the City of Vancouver’s TSC/CSO training program. He has worked in construction\, manufacturing\, forestry\, pulp and paper\, and municipal and provincial governments. In 1998\, Terry was voted Senior Safety Professional of the Year by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering.\n\nWhat previous participants said:\n“Excellent course!
